The good news is, if you’re a member with Free Spirit elite status, you won’t have to pay for selecting your seat. This is one of the perks that come with being part of the Free Spirit program.
When you’re booking your flight, you have a couple of options. You can pay for both seat selection and baggage as a bundle. Another choice is to pick your seats one by one as an add-on during the booking process or even at check-in. So, even if you forget to choose a seat when you book, you still have the chance to do it later.
Spirit Airlines Seat Options
Spirit Airlines makes choosing your seat quite simple compared to other airlines. Here, you’ll find just three types of seats:
Standard Seats
Most seats on Spirit Airlines fall into this category. You can either buy a standard seat separately or include it in a bundle, which we’ll talk about shortly. While a standard seat might be similar to economy class on other airlines, don’t expect much beyond a place to sit. Since Spirit is a budget airline, you usually have to pay extra for things like drinks, snacks, carry-on bags, and additional services.
Premium Seats
Spirit’s premium seats are located in the exit rows. These seats provide a bit more legroom, but there’s a catch, passengers must be capable and willing to assist in an emergency. Due to federal guidelines, individuals under the age of 15 cannot choose these seats.
Big Front Seats
Although Spirit doesn’t have a traditional first-class section, it offers wider seats with extra legroom at the front of the plane, known as the Big Front Seats. Each flight typically has eight to ten of these seats, depending on the aircraft. Passengers in Big Front Seats enjoy up to 32% more legroom compared to standard seats, and there’s no middle seat, all Big Front Seats are either window or aisle seats.
Do I Have to Choose a Seat on Spirit Airlines?
If you’re looking to save money on your flight, you can decide not to pay for selecting a seat on Spirit Airlines. In this case, the airline will randomly assign you a seat when you check in.
Here’s the catch this random assignment might mean you end up sitting away from the people you’re traveling with. Even if you booked your tickets together, Spirit can’t promise that you’ll be given seats next to each other.
It’s important to note that the airline does try to help families with kids. If you’re traveling with someone aged 13 or younger, gate agents and flight attendants will do their best to give you seats next to each other, but it’s not guaranteed.
It’s worth mentioning that this effort by Spirit Airlines doesn’t fully meet the new recommendations from the U.S. Department of Transportation. According to the Department’s suggestions, airlines should guarantee adjacent seating for families at no extra charge, but Spirit’s policy falls short of this guideline.
