  1. Winchester Mystery House

Sarah Winchester, the widow of Winchester Rifle tycoon William Winchester, constructed San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House in 1884. It was seven stories tall, but the 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused some damage. The house is now four floors tall. As a result, there are various oddities in the design, such as stairways and doorways that lead nowhere. There are 40 bedrooms in the mansion, but one operational bathroom. She believed that by taking these precautions during building, she was confusing the spirits.

  1. San Jose Museum of Art

The San Jose Museum of Art boasts an exceptional permanent collection of works by 20th and 21st century West Coast painters. There is a historic wing that was erected in 1892 for the San Jose Post Office and served until 1937. From 1937 through 1969, the structure housed the San Jose Public Library. The Fine Arts Gallery Association purchased it, and the current wing of the museum opened in 1991. This is one of the few museums that focuses on painters from the West Coast.

  1. Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph began as a tiny adobe church built for the benefit of settlers rather than native Indians. Construction began in 1803 at what was then known as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe. The second church was also damaged by the 1868 Hayward Earthquake. The third church was in 1869, but it was destroyed by fire in 1875. A fourth makeshift shelter was a few blocks away. The majestic Basilica that stands today is the sixth and final structure.
