A – Most marathoners are relatively new in marathon running; they’re often not even in shape to race. When a runner is new to something, they don’t know what to do — it might be a new sport, or a new fitness program, or simply a new running pace, etc., etc. If they’re getting really good at it, they may have some pretty heavy resistance to changing what’s worked best for them so far.
You have to be prepared to be patient, and to keep them on their programs. It won’t happen quickly — in fact, most marathoners are very, very busy and don’t have the opportunity to do any serious exercise. There is a great deal of literature on this.
One thing you can do to prepare for long distances is have an open mind. You can watch marathoners (or watch people not racing) who run long distances, and get a feel for just how long and how hard it takes them to accomplish the goal they set
