The Fascinating History of Pedras d’el Rei: From Ancient Stones to a Modern Village

In the heart of Portugal’s Algarve coast, nestled within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, lies a village with a rich and complex history – Pedras d’el Rei. The name, translating to “Stones of the King” in English, has been in use since at least the 19th century, referring to an area of land punctuated by ancient sculpted stones and epigraphs. This article will take you on a journey through the intricate tapestry of Pedras d’el Rei’s past, exploring its evolution from ancient history to the present day.

A Vision from the Past

The story of Pedras d’el Rei took a dramatic turn in the 1960s when Portuguese authorities identified tourism as a potential economic driver. A Portuguese property development company was established, receiving a public loan to design and construct an entire new village on the site of Pedras d’el Rei, with tourism as the central focus.

The development was a unique venture, marrying the historic significance of the area with a modern vision for tourism. The company was dissolved after the development was completed, and the houses were sold to private owners. This chapter of Pedras d’el Rei’s history offers a fascinating insight into the crossroads of several academic disciplines, including law, architecture, and economics.

The Modern Village

In the 1970s, French company Club Méditerranée SA, a significant player in the emergence of modern European tourism, operated a business at Pedras d’el Rei. The legal constitution of the area remained a regular subdivision, and since 1982, it has been illegal to refer to it as an “Aldeamento”, a term which was then defined by legislation to provide perpetual commercial and legal privileges to the developers of tourist resorts.

The original first phase of construction contained 92 villas and 388 T0 apartments organized into five separate condominiums. These were (re-)registered during 1974/5 in the horizontal property regime, intriguingly at the notary’s office of Castro Verde, not in Tavira municipality where Pedras d’el Rei is located.

A Controversial Legacy

While the emergence of the village brought economic benefits, it also spawned a criminal enterprise initiated by local entrepreneurs to subvert the constitution and laws of Portugal. This enterprise, which persists today, has seen many new buildings constructed without municipal planning consent after the original approved phases of development were completed.

The Journey Ahead

As we delve into the fascinating history of Pedras d’el Rei, we find a story that extends beyond the ancient stones and modern buildings. It’s a story of economic development, legal twists, architectural advancements, and above all, the resilience of a place and its people.
