Whatever their age, there is always something exciting for children in Los Angeles. Fast forward a few years to when I was 11, and I was enthralled by the stars and movie industry. I’ve returned twice since then, once with Otis and Arlo on our epic California road trip and again for a vacation to Disneyland and the OC. I’m sure we’ll return as the boys grow older. It’s one of those cities that entices you to return.
There are many things to do in Los Angeles with children, but these are my favourites. It’s a combination of must-dos and hidden treasures. - Disneyland
What would a list of activities to do in Los Angeles with kids be without mentioning Disneyland?! As a child, I fantasized about visiting there, and my children did as well. Doesn’t every child fantasise about going to Disneyland? It is one of the best family attractions in California if not the globe. I received my dream at the age of seven, and we took Otis and Arlo, ages three and five. It takes some forethought to get it perfect.
- Universal Studios
Universal Studios is a popular attraction for people of all ages; it’s great to be in Hollywood and explore the locations of some of your favourite shows on the studio tour. Not to mention the enthralling Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
I’ve been a few times and it’s almost as good as Disneyland, especially for older kids over the age of five. Having said that, we took Otis when he was a baby and had a great time riding the adult attractions. See my guide to visiting Universal Studios with a toddler for more information. It’s one of the most important things to do in Los Angeles with kids.
- Venice Beach
Venice Beach is one of the most enjoyable spots in Los Angeles. It exudes good energy and has an eccentric, bohemian edge that appeals to the entire family. Go to the beach, where you’ll discover a variety of entertainers on the boardwalk. Or hang around at the skate park and watch the skaters. The Venice Canals is very beautiful for a stroll. Adults will also appreciate Abbot Kinney Boulevard for its superb boutique shopping and eateries. Bring the kids to Salt and Straw to keep them entertained!
There are a lot of “characters” near the actual beach in Venice Beach, and the commotion of it all puts some people off. But we enjoyed the vibe, and if you stick to the main places, it feels safe. But, keep an eye on your children because it might get crowded. If you prefer something more refined, make your way up the coast to Santa Monica. But we’d choose Venice every time because it has a lot more charm.
- Santa Monica Pier
Santa Monica, up the coast from Venice Beach, is home to the iconic Santa Monica Pier. It is home to the famous Ferris wheel and roller coaster, as well as a number of other attractions and amusement games for youngsters. It’s tourist, to be sure, but it’s still a great afternoon activity.
It’s a classic stop along the Pacific Coast Highway. It’s also where another legendary American road trip, Route 66, comes to an end. The beach, which is wonderful and spacious, is the highlight of Santa Monica for us. It also has a charming little playground for children. You may take a bus or even cycle all the way to Venice Beach from there. Unlimited Biking rents out children’s bikes and trailers.
- Hollywood
It’s difficult not to be caught up in the Hollywood hype, and older teens in particular are prone to being pumped. It’s fun to visit locations from TV and films and look for your favourite stars on the Walk of Fame. Also check the TCL Chinese Theatre, where celebrities see their films premiere.
And the sight of the Hollywood Sign never fails to impress. You could also take a tour of the celebrities’ homes (something I was quite interested in when I was 11). There’s also this entertaining self-guided tour of renowned movie locales. World of Illusions and Madame Tussauds Hollywood are two other attractions in Hollywood.
