Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms – gastrointestinal disorders

In a previous article, we discussed the risk groups for vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms: Vegetarians, pregnant and lactating women (especially those who are also vegetarians), adults over 50, and people with gastrointestinal disorders. Each of these groups is naturally at higher vitamin for men deficiency because their digestive processes are altered. They should monitor themselves more closely and consider supplements to avoid symptoms of B12 deficiency.

In this article, we will focus on the needs of gastrointestinal patients. Since vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine with the help of acids and proteins produced in the stomach, any disturbance in their natural state will result in decreased absorption. Most adults require 2.4mcg per day, otherwise B12 deficiency symptoms may occur.

Gastric Bypass Surgery:

For many people, this is a great life-changing surgery to lose weight and live a longer life. However, because the stomach is much smaller after this surgery, it is unable to produce enough acid and protein that the body needs to absorb the B12. The acids break down the B12 from the animal proteins in the foods (dairy products, eggs, red meat, chicken, fish, etc.). The protein “intrinsic factor” formed in the stomach then combines with the B12 to aid the absorption process in the intestines. In this case, the intestines are fine, but the stomach cannot prepare the B12.

Gastrointestinal Disease:

Many people suffer from Chron’s disease, ulcerative colitis or celiac disease. All of these diseases cause inflammation in the intestinal tract, which damages the intestinal wall or removes all probiotics that help break down food further. The body can no longer absorb everything, certainly not vitamin B12. Vital nutrients are literally flushed right through the body. In this case, the stomach is fine and prepares the B12 properly, but the intestines cannot absorb it.

Prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms:

Both groups need to find alternative ways to get B12. Any supplement that is swallowed cannot be absorbed by the body. Supplements that get around this include ear patches, injections, and even nasal sprays.
